Week 4 Story Laboratory: Crash Course Myth videos

  • Mythology Video #1
    • I didn't realize mythology mixes so many different topics like sociology, history, religion, psychology, etc. Pretty interesting!
    • I like that parts of mythology are compilations of many different versions and that there are just so many different voices and interpretations. Also, how mythology focuses more on stories and ideas rather than truths. Myths do not claim to be fact but simply stories. Whether or not they are fact is up to the reader. In most cases in history at least. The term "myths" is more related to something being false in today's culture.
    • So cool that some myths have lasted millennia
    • Interesting how they dub something a myth-based on its significance and staying power
    • I like how some myths explain natural phenomena. Like the Persephone story, where her story explains the seasons. Also just the depth of mythology and how many different types of myths there are.
  • Mythology Video #2
    • Euhemerism is an interesting term that describes a specific type of myth. Being myths that are primitive descriptions of the natural world or interpretations of historical events that have been distorted over time
    • However, Plato thought myths were false
    • Fascinating that there is believed to be a people called the Aerians that spread across part of Africa, Europe, and Asia but haven't been proved to have actually existed
    • Freud and Jung believe that myths come from our unconscious
      • Freud thinks the unconscious is individual truth more or less
      • Jung thinks the unconscious is a mix of everyone's thoughts
    • Joseph Campbell: "Mythology is ultimately and always the vehicle through which the individual finds a sense of identity and place in the world."
      • Makes sense with how personal and unique some stories are and how they can reflect the morals/believes of a writer
      • Also, super cool that George Lucas was partly inspired by Joseph Campbell to make Star Wars

  • Mythology Video #3
    • The Hero's Journey
      • Hero's tell us something about ourselves
    • I like the idea that "we are all heroes." I've never thought of myself as a hero, but I identify with the description in the video of being on a journey, struggling, seeking wisdom, and understanding my role in this world
    • Monomyth, or The Hero's Journey, is an idea that all hero stories follow similar if not exactly the same parts
      • Those parts being: part 1 separation which includes the sub-parts of the call to adventure, refusal of the call, supernatural aid, and crossing the 1st threshold
      • Part 2 trials and victories of initiation includes the sub-parts of the belly of the whale, the road of trials, the meeting with the goddess, woman as temptress, atonement with the father, apotheosis, the ultimate boon, and refusal of the return
      • Part 3 return inclures sub-parts the magic flight, rescue from without, crossing the return threshold, master of the two worlds, and freedom to live
    • Also, the story of the 7 sisters sounds incredibly painful and a little terrible but they come out of the other end content and even happy. Interesting story of tribal heroes
  • The question remains: What will your heroes journey be like?
